mr atkinson, hillam, leeds, west yorkshire - the ultimate mobility suite.

22 July 2016

problem:

Mr Atkinson was an older gentleman who lived in a large bungalow having struggled with mobility for a number of years. Now confined to a wheelchair for a large proportion of the day Mr Atkinson was wanting to update his existing facilities in order to increase his independence within his own home with a series of modern day adaptations and internal building renovations.

Aside from a very old mobility bathroom in another part of the home Mr Atkinson struggled with the existing bathroom and adjoining WC which featured DIY adaptations in the form of a toilet frame to help with getting on and off and a series of grab rails and a step to assist with getting in and out of the bath – not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.

A big rethink was required in terms of possible and preferred solutions as well as detailed discussions over how, where, what and why would be integrated.

solution:

More Ability Surveyor & Designer Andy Keir visited Mr Atkinson’s property with an open mind. Following previous discussions Andy was aware of what the problems were and what Mr Atkinson was willing to do to overcome them however between them they needed to work out how and where to incorporate solutions.

At the site visit Andy & Mr Atkinson spoke in detail about what he was struggling with Andy suggesting possible solutions to help overcome. Mr Atkinson made it clear from the start that he wanted to explore the concept of integrating several internal building projects in order to combine both existing bathroom & WC, making one large bathroom to be designed at a later date as well as dividing the existing master bedroom into a smaller bedroom and separate en-suite which would house a stylish yet accessible wet room (the core project) that would be reachable via the new master bedroom.

outcome:

Andy helped Mr Atkinson realise his ideal home renovations and adaptations that catered for both his wants and needs. Creating an all new layout to a key area in the home Andy was able to incorporate everything Mr Atkinson had specified including a state of the art, stylish and accessible wet room which was the main focus of the entire project and the reason behind the internal building works.

The fully tiled en-suite wet room was entirely wheelchair accessible and stylish in appearance. Aside from the main showering solution the suite also housed a wheelchair accessible basin and raised height WC creating the ultimate mobility suite.
